Enshrouded: builds, gear and optional content
The Enshrouded progression route tells you what to do next. This page covers the decisions it deliberately leaves to you — where your skill points go, when to upgrade equipment instead of replacing it, and which optional content is worth the detour.
Early Access. Written against v0.9.1.2 — level cap 45, maximum Flame level 9. Version 1.0 releases on October 15, 2026 and the specifics below may change with it. This page will be re-verified after launch.
The loop, in every region
Whenever you enter a new region, work in this order. It is the same eight steps every time, and it is the reason the route is shaped the way it is:
- Activate the Ancient Spire
- Follow the Flame’s main quests
- Complete primary craftsperson quests
- Strengthen the Flame
- Upgrade your armour and primary weapon
- Clear nearby Elixir Wells and Shroud Roots
- Complete the region’s Hollow Halls
- Side quests and exploration
Main quests from the Flame and from craftspeople unlock NPCs, workshops, recipes and access to later regions. The 2026 quest-log rework separates progression-critical quests from side quests, so anything shown as a main quest takes priority.
A routine that works
- Activate the Ancient Spire
- Glide outward to reveal nearby map markers
- Place a forward Flame Altar near a central resource or quest location
- Complete the closest primary quests
- Mark mines, farms and rare resources
- Clear Elixir Wells and Roots while you are near them
- Return home and process resources
- Upgrade your equipment
- Complete the regional boss or Flame gate
- Come back for optional locations after the next equipment tier
Flame Altars double as bases, fast-travel points and Rested-buff heat sources. The current limit is ten active altars, so it is worth spending several as pure travel anchors rather than making every one a settlement.
Skill points
Points come from three places:
| Source | Points |
|---|---|
| Levelling | 2 per level |
| Shroud Root | 1 each |
| Elixir Well | 3 each |
At level 45, clearing everything currently available gives a maximum of 184 points. Roots and Wells each pay out once per character, even though the world location respawns — so farming them again does nothing for your build.
Pick one identity first
Choose melee, ranger or mage, and commit. Invest in a single weapon family, its primary damage attribute, survivability, and one or two exploration skills before spreading out. Hybridise later, once Roots and Wells have topped you up.
Resetting costs one Rune per spent point at a Flame Altar, so experimenting gets cheap once you have Runes to spare — but early on, an evenly-spread build is simply a weak one.
Worth taking on any build
- Double Jump — the best early exploration investment. The 2026 skill-tree redesign moved it toward the centre specifically so every combat archetype can reach it.
- Well Rested — extends the Rested buff, which means more effective stamina uptime everywhere.
- Inner Fires — increases maximum Shroud time, which matters once Shroud areas get large.
- Updraft — one upward boost per glide. Excellent later, but it costs 100 Mana per use.
Gear: upgrade before you replace
Since the Forging the Path update you can enhance armour, shields, wards, rings, pickaxes, felling axes and weapons. Class equipment is enhanced by its own survivor — Blacksmith for warrior gear, Hunter for ranger, Alchemist for mage. Salvage obsolete weapons and unwanted loot to build up Runes.
Replace by biome
- Replace your primary weapon every biome
- Replace armour whenever the next regional crafting set unlocks
- Upgrade genuinely strong epic or legendary items
- Do not pour Runes into equipment already several levels behind what you are fighting
That last one is the expensive mistake. Runes spent on gear you are about to outgrow are simply gone.
Crafted versus looted
- Crafted — predictable, and available the moment you unlock the recipe
- Looted — can roll better perks and higher rarity
- Lore weapons — a guaranteed option at each unlocked tier, useful for filling gaps
- Boss and unique weapons — build-defining when they suit you, but never required
Optional content, and when it is worth it
Hollow Halls
One per major biome, with the quest chain started by the Alchemist. They can be soloed, but they are designed as difficult encounters — go near the top of each biome’s level range:
| Hall | Level |
|---|---|
| Springlands | 8–10 |
| Revelwood | 13–15 |
| Nomad Highlands | 18–20 |
| Kindlewastes | 25–30 |
| Later Halls | once you hold that region’s armour tier |
Night Sanctums
Only open at night, and they hold exclusive rewards — some contain powerful Gem Forges. Attempt them once you can comfortably handle the region’s normal enemies and its night patrols, which are not the same bar.
Gem Forges
Weapon gems add customisation, and gem-compatible weapons appear at higher rarities. Forges let you insert, remove, upgrade and recycle gems. Use the forge from the highest region you can safely reach — upgrade limits scale by biome, so a lower forge caps what you can do.
Side quests
Worth doing when they give crafting stations, recipes, survivors, backpack improvements, gliders, tools, building blocks, unique equipment, or new food and farming systems.
Lore-only quests and cosmetic rewards can safely wait.
