Final Fantasy XI unlocks

The August 12 update's main permanent addition — no new story chapter or mission chain this time. Defeating one of the new NMs spawns a locked treasure box that despawns after only 3 Earth minutes, so decide who is opening it before you pull. Square Enix's wording: any party or alliance member who earned experience from the kill can open the box without an item, provided they have not left the zone. Everyone else needs an Orvail Box Key. The NMs are repeatable — the tickable state here is your first kill and first drops.

Square Enix states that once an Abyssal Mask is disposed of, players are unable to receive another under any circumstances — there is no recovery, even inside the claim window. If your inventory is full at login it will be granted after you free a slot and change zones or relog.

⚠️ The event itself does not open until August 22, so the clears and the weapons are NOT listed as tickable steps here — they are carried on the event entry instead. What IS worth doing in advance are the entry requirements, which are ordinary game progression you can complete today. The third requirement is the Shadow Lord phantom gem, which costs 10 Merit Points; whether it can be acquired before the event opens is on the verification list, so it is described here rather than given a checkbox. Worth knowing before you rush: Square Enix has confirmed the event runs three times in total — this session plus one in September and one in October — with the same weapons available each time, so missing this window is not final. Only the Curator Moogle items differ between sessions.
