World of Warcraft — Midnight Season 2
Season 2 is live. It opened with each region's weekly maintenance reset in the week of August 18 — NA Tuesday, EU Wednesday — and this is the first week the Season 2 systems run together: Mythic+, Bountiful Delves and Restored Coffer Keys, Nightmare Prey, The Venomous Abyss, the higher Tidebound Grotto Lair difficulties, the Venomblight Manaflux Catalyst, rated PvP and Season 2 Great Vault progression. Everything below is written for that opening week, August 18–24.
The week in one sentence
Take the guaranteed rewards first, unlock the systems that gate the rest of the season, build a Champion floor out of Delves and Prey, then push Tier and Hero/Myth gear — and commit Sparks, Catalyst charges and Mistcrests only once you know what the week actually dropped.
Fast routePick up the weeklies → Inspect the Vault → Reach 4 Sparks → Unlock the Coiled Isle portal → 3 Nightmare Prey Hunts → Delve intro → Tier 8 → Nemesis + Trovehunter + Coffer Key in one Bountiful run → Kill ?? 1. Open the week0 / 7
Pick your weeklies up BEFORE you run anything, so your normal route also progresses them instead of forcing a repeat later. Two matter most: Unity Against the Void, where you should pick the objective that overlaps content you already intend to run, and Trailing Xal'atath, whose 100 Fading Voidwhispers accumulate from ordinary play. On the Vault: open it now, but there is a real argument for delaying the pick. Bountiful Delves, Trovehunter's Bounty, Nightmare Prey, raid, LFR, Tidebound Grotto, Mythic+ and campaign quests are all about to hand you gear, and choosing early risks a guaranteed drop replacing the same slot hours later. The August 18 Vault comes from preseason activity and does NOT yet carry the Nebulous Voidcore alternative — that starts with the August 25 Vault. Because this first Vault is restricted, Tokens of Merit are a more reasonable pick than usual when the gear on offer is mediocre. The Spark of Tides cap is 4 this week, raised so characters with inconsistent preseason Spark availability can catch up; four Sparks fund roughly two normal Spark-crafted items, or one two-handed weapon.
- Pick up Unity Against the VoidThe Silvermoon weekly hub. Choose the objective that overlaps the content you already plan to run this weekReward Weekly progress, Spark eligibility
- Pick up Trailing Xal'atathCollect 100 Fading Voidwhispers. They drop from ordinary play — dungeons, Delves, treasures and dangerous enemies — so this fills in while you do everything elseReward Weekly progress, Spark eligibility
- do this firstPick up the rest of your weeklies before running contentCurse Surge, Coiled Isle, PvP and profession weeklies. Anything picked up afterwards is content you may have to run twiceReward No wasted repeats
- inspect, don't claimOpen and inspect your August 18 Great VaultLook at what is on offer now, but hold the selection until later in the week — see the note aboveReward Information, not a commitment
- Reach the 4 Spark of Tides capStart with your Silvermoon weeklies. If you are still under the cap, the Curse Surge weekly and eligible PvP weekly quests are the catch-up routesReward 4x Spark of Tides
- Check your available Catalyst chargeVenomblight Manaflux. Know what you are holding before you decide which Tier slots to chaseReward A plan for your set bonus
- Review your weakest gear slotsDo this before spending anything. Buying, crafting or upgrading before you know your weak slots is how you end up with a duplicateReward A shopping list, not a guess
2. Prey and the Coiled Isle portal0 / 6
Prey comes before Delves in the optimal route because it feeds them: Champion-track rewards, Coffer Key Shards, weekly progress and the Delve Nemesis summon all come out of this block. The portal is the standout — a permanent fast-travel link between the Silvermoon area and the Coiled Isle, which is where Venomous Abyss, the Altar of Fangs, Prey and the rest of the 12.1 content sit. Unlock it even if you never intend to farm Prey; it saves travel time for the whole season. Three Hunts is the target because it clears the weekly objective, collects both gear-bearing first Hunts, and supplies Coffer Key Shards in one pass.
- Start "Prey: A Slithering Threat"Astalor's Sanctum. The introductory chain for Season 2's Nightmare Prey systemsReward Access to Nightmare Prey
- Pick up the Nightmare Prey weeklyAvailable at Astalor's Sanctum while you are there for the intro chainReward Weekly progress
- permanent unlockUnlock the Silvermoon to Coiled Isle portalOpens from the Prey introductory chain. A permanent convenience for the rest of the seasonReward Permanent fast travel
- Complete 3 Nightmare Prey HuntsClears the weekly objective, collects the gear-bearing Hunts and banks Coffer Key Shards in the same passReward Preyseeker gear, Coffer Key Shards, World Vault progress
- Collect the first two Nightmare Prey gear rewardsThe first two Hunts carry the Preyseeker gear rewards; later Hunts in the same week do notReward 2x Preyseeker piece
- Obtain the Delve Nemesis summon itemFrom Prey progression. Hold it — you want to use it inside a Tier 8+ Bountiful Delve, not a low-value oneReward Access to ?? Azta'rec
3. Delves — reach Tier 8 before you spend anything0 / 8
Tier 8 is the breakpoint the whole Delve block turns on. A Tier 8+ Bountiful chest is a guaranteed 295 Champion 2/6 piece; the Tier 8+ Trovehunter's Bounty and the Tier 8+ World Great Vault slot are both 305 Hero 1/6. Going from Tier 8 to Tiers 9–11 does NOT raise the base Bountiful chest or the normal World Vault item level, so for pure gearing efficiency Tier 8 is the target — higher tiers are for Mistcrests, Delver's Journey, Nemesis access and achievements. On keys: the weekly Coffer Key Shard cap converts to 6 Restored Coffer Keys, and the one-time Delver's Starter Kit adds 2 more, so opening week can reach roughly 8 Bountiful chest openings. Those two starter keys are one-time and do not repeat. Stack the run rather than splitting it: enter a Tier 8+ Bountiful Delve, trigger the Nemesis, consume the Trovehunter map, finish the Delve, open the chest with a key, then claim the hidden Trovehunter reward. ?? Azta'rec is the biggest single item here — its higher difficulty awards 30 Hero and 30 Myth Mistcrests as one-time progression, plus another 30 Hero if you never took the lower-difficulty reward, all of it OUTSIDE the weekly crest cap. A group kill counts; the solo kill only matters for separate achievements.
- 2 free keysComplete the Season 2 Delve introductionAwards the one-time Delver's Starter Kit — 2 Restored Coffer Keys — and unlocks Valeera's three new Season 2 Delve poisons/toolsReward 2x Restored Coffer Key, Valeera's Season 2 tools
- the breakpointReach Delve Tier 8Everything below waits on this. Do not spend keys or the Trovehunter map until you are hereReward Access to the 295/305 rewards
- Obtain this week's Trovehunter's BountyFrom "Purging the Vaults", the 12.1 weekly in the Vaults of Atal'Utek. One map per character per weekReward Trovehunter's Bounty map
- Trigger the Nemesis inside a Tier 8+ Bountiful DelveEnter a Tier 8+ Bountiful Delve first, then summon. The encounter can be started at lower difficulty, but doing it here is what stacks the rewards into one runReward ?? Azta'rec encounter at full value
- Tier 8+ onlyConsume the Trovehunter map, then finish the Tier 8+ DelveThe hidden chest is 305 Hero 1/6 at Tier 8 or above. Below Tier 8 the map is wasted, and for a solo-focused character this is one of the easiest guaranteed Hero pieces of the weekReward 305 Hero 1/6
- Open the Bountiful chest with a Restored Coffer KeyThe Tier 8+ Bountiful end-chest is a guaranteed piece rather than a roll on dungeon lootReward 295 Champion 2/6
- Spend the rest of your Restored Coffer Keys at Tier 8+Up to 8 openings this week if you have all 6 weekly shard keys plus the 2 starter keys. This is the fastest Champion foundation available before you need Mythic+Reward Up to 8x 295 Champion 2/6
- uncapped crestsKill ?? Azta'recDo this BEFORE spending large amounts of Hero or Myth crests — the reward is a one-time injection that sits outside the weekly cap. A group is fineReward Up to 60 Hero + 30 Myth Mistcrests
4. Raid and Lair0 / 6
The Venomous Abyss has 8 bosses. Bosses 2–6 carry Tier token opportunities and Ula'tek can drop a Curio used for a Tier choice. LFR Wing 1 contains Nek'zali and Twin Fangs, and Twin Fangs can drop the Tier helm token — which is why an LFR clear is worth it even for Heroic raiders during the opening weeks, when an extra Tier chance is disproportionately valuable. Raid Vault rewards jump well above the direct raid-drop track: LFR gives 292 Champion 1/6, Normal 305 Hero 1/6, Heroic 318 Myth 1/6 and Mythic 334 Myth 6/6 — and the last two bosses can roll a 344 Vault item, the top of the ladder. That makes Heroic one of the highest-value opening-week objectives for an organised group. Tidebound Grotto Lair kills count toward the Raid row too, so Nymrissa reduces the number of Venomous Abyss bosses you need for a threshold. Priority on the Lair is Mythic > Heroic > Normal > World. Story Mode and Raid Finder Wing 2 open August 25.
- before you raidPick up the Venomous Abyss campaign quest before you enterOn the Coiled Isle campaign, after the 12.1 story. It asks you to clear the raid and rewards a choice of two Champion-track rings with different secondary combinations — bonus gear for content you already planned to runReward Champion-track ring (choice of two)
- Run LFR Wing 1Nek'zali and Twin Fangs. Twin Fangs can drop the Tier helm token — take the extra Tier chance even if you raid higherReward Tier token chance
- Kill Nymrissa Wavecaller at your highest practical difficultyTidebound Grotto Lair, now running at World, Normal, Heroic and Mythic. Counts toward the Raid row of the Great Vault as well as dropping loot directlyReward Lair gear + Raid Vault progress
- Clear The Venomous Abyss and reach a Raid Vault threshold0 / 3Highest difficulty you can hold. Lair kills count toward these thresholds alongside raid bossesReward Up to three Raid Vault choices
- Prioritise the Tier-dropping bossesBosses 2–6 carry the Tier token opportunities; Ula'tek can provide a Curio used for a Tier choiceReward Tier set pieces
- before item levelReach your Season 2 set bonuses0 / 2Tier acquisition beats the initial item level of each Tier slot this early — a low-track Tier piece can be replaced later, a missing set bonus costs you all weekReward 2-set, then 4-set
5. Mythic+0 / 4
Once the one-time and guaranteed rewards are handled, Mythic+ is the repeatable engine. End-of-dungeon loot runs 295 Champion 2/6 at +2 and +3, 298 Champion 3/6 at +4, 302 Champion 4/6 at +5, 305 Hero 1/6 at +6 and +7, 308 Hero 2/6 at +8 and +9, and 311 Hero 3/6 at +10 and above. The Great Vault side runs 305 Hero 1/6 at +2 and +3, 308 Hero 2/6 at +4 and +5, 311 Hero 3/6 at +6, 315 Hero 4/6 at +7 through +9, and 318 Myth 1/6 at +10. Three breakpoints are what actually matter: +6 is where repeatable Hero-track loot begins, +9 is where Myth Mistcrests begin, and +10 is where the Vault slot turns Myth. Dungeon Vault slot quality comes from your highest, fourth-highest and eighth-highest qualifying runs. Do not brick +10s repeatedly chasing the theoretical maximum — efficient +8/+9 farming often produces more gear than hours spent failing +10.
- Fill the Dungeon row of the Great Vault0 / 3Slot quality comes from your highest, fourth-highest and eighth-highest qualifying runsReward Up to three Dungeon Vault choices
- Reach +6 for repeatable Hero-track lootThe first major repeatable Hero breakpoint. If you are trying to replace Champion gear efficiently, farm here or aboveReward 305 Hero 1/6 end-of-dungeon
- Reach +9 for Myth MistcrestsDirect loot barely moves from +8, but Myth Mistcrest access is what makes +9 worth the step upReward 308 Hero 2/6 + Myth Mistcrests
- Myth VaultComplete at least one +10The opening-week sweet spot for a capable group. One +10 is the minimum, four is better, eight is idealReward 311 Hero 3/6 direct, 318 Myth 1/6 in the Vault
6. Spend last — Sparks, Catalyst and crests0 / 7
Crest strategy for the opening week: Veteran Mistcrests are low priority and mostly a catch-up and upgrade-discount tool; Champion Mistcrests should be spent selectively, because Champion gear gets replaced fast once Heroic raid, higher keys and Trovehunter come online; Hero Mistcrests are high value on Tier, trinkets, weapons and crafting upgrades; Myth Mistcrests are the scarcest and belong on 331 crafts, Myth-track gear and exceptional weapons or trinkets. On crafting, a Hero-level Spark craft reaches roughly 318 and a Myth-level craft reaches 331, which makes a 331 craft one of the strongest guaranteed items available this week. A two-handed weapon consumes all four Sparks — worth it for some specs, but check whether yours prefers a raid special-effect weapon, a specific Mythic+ weapon or a one-hand plus off-hand setup first. On the Catalyst: use the charge to complete a 2-set or 4-set, never on a random eligible slot. Completing the Tier/Catalyst progression enables Catalyst Unbound, which yields further Venomblight Manaflux from endgame content — so rushing 4-set improves your ability to acquire future Tier conversions, not just your current power.
- Check your spec's guidance before committing SparksSim or check your spec's BiS information once your major weekly drops are known. Four Sparks is a single decision you cannot take backReward The right craft, not the fast one
- Spend your Sparks on long-term gearRoughly 318 at Hero level, up to 331 at Myth level. Two normal crafts, or one two-handed weaponReward Up to ilvl 331
- set bonus onlyUse a Catalyst charge to complete a set bonusVenomblight Manaflux. Complete a 2-set or 4-set with it — do not spend it just because you have an eligible slotReward 2-set or 4-set
- high-endEarn the Serpent Scion Catalyst chargeThe Season 2 Serpent Scion achievement path — Heroic or Mythic Ula'tek, 2,000 Mythic+ rating, or 1,600 rated PvP ratingReward Extra Venomblight Manaflux charge
- Spend Hero and Myth Mistcrests on gear you expect to keepTier, trinkets, weapons, special-effect gear and crafting upgrades. Do this after ?? Azta'rec, so the uncapped injection is in hand firstReward Upgraded long-term pieces
- now, not earlierSelect your August 18 Great Vault rewardPriority is roughly: Tier piece that activates a set bonus, then an exceptional weapon, then an exceptional trinket, then a strong long-term item, then the biggest raw upgrade. Tokens of Merit are a fair pick if the choices are mediocreReward Weekly gear reward
- Gem and enchant the pieces you are keepingOnly once you know which items survived the week's dropsReward Full value from your gear
7. Close the week — build the August 25 Vault0 / 4
This week's activity determines your first fully operational Season 2 Great Vault. The thresholds are Raid 2/4/6 bosses, Dungeon 1/4/8 runs and World 2/4/8 activities. For the World row, Tier 8+ Delves and sufficiently difficult Nightmare Prey both count and can reach 305 Hero 1/6. From the August 25 Vault onward, earning at least three reward panes in a week also unlocks Nebulous Voidcore — a Season 2 bonus-roll currency for eligible activities — so three panes is worth reaching even if you are nowhere near filling all nine choices. A casual route is one Raid pane, one Dungeon pane and one World pane, or any three panes through whatever content you prefer.
- Verify your Raid Vault progress2 / 4 / 6 qualifying kills. Tidebound Grotto Lair kills count here tooReward Raid Vault panes
- Verify your Dungeon Vault progress1 / 4 / 8 Mythic+ runsReward Dungeon Vault panes
- Verify your World Vault progress2 / 4 / 8 activities. Tier 8+ Delves and Nightmare Prey Hunts both count, and can reach 305 Hero 1/6Reward World Vault panes
- capstoneUnlock at least 3 Great Vault panesThree panes in a week is the gate on the Nebulous Voidcore option, starting with the August 25 Vault. Any mix of Raid, Dungeon and World countsReward Nebulous Voidcore eligibility
Do
- Pick up Unity Against the Void and Trailing Xal'atath before you run anything else.
- Reach the 4 Spark of Tides cap — it was raised so preseason characters can catch up.
- Unlock the Silvermoon to Coiled Isle portal even if you never intend to farm Prey.
- Reach Delve Tier 8 before spending a single Restored Coffer Key.
- Stack the Nemesis summon, the Trovehunter map and a Coffer Key into one Tier 8+ Bountiful run.
- Kill ?? Azta'rec early — its crests sit outside the weekly cap, and a group kill counts.
- Run LFR Wing 1 for the Tier helm token even if you raid Heroic.
- Get the set bonus first and optimise the item level later.
- Finish the week with at least 3 Great Vault panes.
Don't
- Don't select your August 18 Vault reward before your guaranteed drops land.
- Don't spend the Trovehunter's Bounty map below Tier 8.
- Don't assume the two Delve intro keys repeat every week — they are a one-time starter kit.
- Don't enter The Venomous Abyss before picking up the related campaign quest.
- Don't Catalyst a random piece when waiting would complete a 2-set or 4-set.
- Don't spend all 4 Sparks on a two-handed weapon without confirming your spec wants it.
- Don't dump Myth Mistcrests into gear you expect to replace.
- Don't keep farming Mythic 0 daily once you are comfortably clearing Mythic+.
- Don't chase 8 × +10 if repeated failures would produce less gear than efficient +8/+9 runs.
