Path of Exile 2 — Forbidden Rites
Forbidden Rites · Sep 4, 2026 – end pending verification
Forbidden Rites launched September 4, 2026 at 20:00 UTC (1 PM PDT) alongside patch 0.5.5, adding Ritual encounters throughout the campaign, boss-cluster Ritual Effigies, and 8 new challenges. Grinding Gear Games has not announced an end date. The existing Runes of Aldur league continues running in parallel — nothing already banked there is lost.
The league in one sentence
Run the four-act campaign completing its Ritual Effigy boss clusters for Unique rewards, collect every permanent campaign reward, open the Atlas, complete the Fortress, then work the core endgame storylines and pinnacles toward the league's 8 challenges.
Fast routePhases 0–5 are close to sequential and worth doing in order. From Phase 6 onward the game opens up — Fortress progression is the backbone, and the Masters and endgame mechanic storylines (Delirium, Breach, Ritual, Fate of the Vaal, Abyss) can all advance in parallel around whichever farming strategy suits your build.

League Progression
Verified for 0.5.5 — Forbidden Rites✓ Verified in-gameLeague Progression131
Forbidden Rites runs in phases rather than numbered ranks. Phases 0–5 take you through the campaign; from Phase 6 the Atlas opens and much of what follows can be done in any order. The former Runes of Aldur endgame storyline (Kingsmarch, Farrow's endgame questline, The Bodach) is not carried over here — 0.5.5 didn't confirm whether it exists in Forbidden Rites, so it's omitted rather than guessed at. Runes of Aldur itself keeps running separately if you want to finish it there.
Phase 0 — League start0 / 9
Forbidden Rites replaces Runes of Aldur's Runic Remnant/Verisium system with campaign-wide Ritual encounters. Existing Early Access and Runes of Aldur characters stay where they are — playing Forbidden Rites needs a new character.
- Create a character under the Forbidden Rites banner
- Pick your league variantTrade, Solo Self-Found, Hardcore, or a private-league variant.
- Choose your class and build direction
- Start allocating the Passive Skill Tree toward your levelling build
- Upgrade Skill Gems as Uncut Skill Gems drop
- Add Support Gems to your primary damage skills
- Work the campaign's Ritual encounters as you reach themOne per campaign area. Unlike Atlas Rituals, these hand out levelling rewards — crafting currency and gear — rather than endgame drops.
- Watch for Ritual Effigy clustersTwice per Act and once per Interlude, effigies cluster on top of that area's boss fight instead of a random spot. Clearing one carries the boss forward into the next area's Ritual as part of an escalating boss-wave chain.
- Complete a boss-wave chain and spend the Tribute it pays on Unique items
