EVE Online — Exploration Career
Scanning, hacking and staying alive somewhere you should not be. Progression here is geographic, not a hull ladder — a frigate can be your endgame ship.
What this guide is
A run-along checklist, not an article. EVE has no weekly lockout in exploration either — sites spawn and despawn dynamically, so nothing here resets and nothing on this page clears itself.
The structural thing to understand before you start: you progress by going somewhere more dangerous, not by flying something bigger. Exordium → Highsec → Lowsec → Nullsec and Wormholes. A Covert Ops frigate is a legitimate endgame hull, and the Odysseus and Strategic Cruisers are specialisations rather than upgrades.
Five branches, none of them gated. Finish the trunk and master any ONE of them and the career is complete.

What an explorer actually needs to know first0 / 8
Exordium is a 53-system starter region where PvP is mechanically prevented, which makes it an unusually good place to learn scanning and hacking without being hunted. Its loot tables are deliberately reduced, so use it to learn and then leave — staying there for profit is the mistake.
- Complete the AIR New Player Experience
- milestoneLearn the Overview, the Probe Scanner and the Directional ScannerThese three windows are the entire exploration interface.
- Learn how the EVE map works
- milestoneLearn bookmarks, warping to them, and making safe spotsA safe spot is an empty point in space nobody can warp to directly. You will live in them.
- Learn the difference between stargates and wormholes
- Learn Highsec, Lowsec, Nullsec, Pochven and Wormhole spaceSecurity status is the main variable in both your danger and your income.
- the ruleAccept that exploration ships are expendableCheap hull, expensive cargo. That asymmetry defines the career.
- Keep loot value separate from your ship replacement budgetThe two must never be the same pool of ISK.
First scans in a safe place0 / 5
Use Exordium as a training ground and then move on.
- Complete your first scan
- Complete your first Data SiteReward Data loot
- Complete your first Relic SiteReward Relic loot
- Become comfortable operating probes
- the ruleLeave Exordium when you are ready for normal New EdenReduced loot tables make it a poor long-term home.
Phase 1 — Explorer Career Agent & AIR13
The Career Agent chain0 / 7
The structured introduction to every mechanic the rest of this route assumes.
- Find the Explorer Career Agent and start the chainReward Ships, modules, starting ISK
- Learn to launch and reposition probes
- Learn to reduce probe scan radiusShrinking the sphere as signal strength rises is the whole technique.
- Scan a cosmic signature to 100% and warp to it
- Learn Data Analyzer and Relic Analyzer mechanics
- Complete the hacking minigame
- Finish the Explorer Career Agent chainReward Career agent rewards
AIR Career Program — Explorer0 / 6
CCP defines the Explorer path around four areas: Navigation, Scanning, Hacking and Project Discovery. Progression is permanent rather than seasonal, and carries separate Alpha and Omega reward tracks.
- Begin the Navigation objectivesReward AIR rewards
- Begin the Scanning objectivesReward AIR rewards
- Begin the Hacking objectivesReward AIR rewards
- Begin the Project Discovery objectivesProject Discovery is officially part of the Explorer career even though it involves no space at all.
- Track an Explorer goal and claim objective rewards as they landReward Skill points
- Complete the Explorer career graduation objectivesReward Explorer track completion
Phase 2 — Your first exploration ship4
Amarr — Magnate0 / 1
All four T1 exploration frigates are legitimate. There is no reason to cross-train simply because another empire's hull is marginally better suited to a fitting style.
- Train Amarr Frigate and fit a Magnate
Caldari — Heron0 / 1
- Train Caldari Frigate and fit a Heron
Gallente — Imicus0 / 1
- Train Gallente Frigate and fit an Imicus
Minmatar — Probe0 / 1
- Train Minmatar Frigate and fit a Probe
Phase 3 — The starter fit and the starter skills11
A working first fit0 / 5
High: Core Probe Launcher I with Core Scanner Probes. Mid: propulsion, Data Analyzer I, Relic Analyzer I, optionally a Scan Rangefinding Array or Cargo Scanner. Low: mobility and survival — Nanofiber Internal Structure, Inertial Stabilizers, or a Warp Core Stabilizer where it suits. Rigs: Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade and a second scanning or navigation rig.
- the ruleFit a probe launcher and carry spare Core Scanner ProbesSpares are not optional. Losing your probes far from home ends the trip.
- Fit both a Data and a Relic AnalyzerCarrying only one halves the sites you can run.
- Fit for mobility and escape in the lows
- Carry a Mobile Depot once you understand its use
- the ruleDo not turn a cheap frigate into an expensive loot piñataEvery ISK of bling makes you a better target for the same reward.
The baseline skills0 / 6
EVE University recommends at least Astrometrics III, Astrometric Rangefinding II, Archaeology II and Hacking II before a serious attempt at exploration. Treat that as the floor, not the target.
- Astrometrics IIIScan strength, deviation and scan time all improve together.
- Astrometric Rangefinding IIDirect probe strength — the highest-value scanning skill per level.
- Hacking II and Archaeology IIData and Relic respectively. Train both.
- Racial Frigate III–IV
- Navigation III, Evasive Maneuvering III, and your propulsion skill
- CPU Management III–IV and Power Grid Management III–IV
Phase 4 — Learn probe scanning properly11
What the scanner is actually telling you0 / 7
Clicking Scan repeatedly is not scanning. Exploration is using probes to find hidden cosmic signatures containing sites, wormholes and resources — the skill is reading signal strength and shrinking the sphere deliberately.
- milestoneUnderstand the difference between Cosmic Anomalies and Cosmic SignaturesAnomalies are listed for free; signatures must be scanned down.
- Launch eight probes
- Learn the Pinpoint and Spread formations
- Centre the probes on a signature and scan wide first
- milestoneReduce scan range as signal strength risesThis is the core loop of the entire career.
- Move probes in three dimensionsSignatures are rarely on your current plane. Most new explorers forget the Z axis.
- Resolve a signature to 100%, bookmark it, and recall your probesRecalling means you keep them — probes are reusable when recalled correctly.
Signature types0 / 4
Learning to recognise these from the scan result saves enormous amounts of time.
- Identify Data Sites and Relic Sites
- Identify Wormholes
- Identify Gas Sites
- Identify Combat Sites
Phase 5 — The hacking minigame10
Coherence, strength and the System Core0 / 6
The minigame matters more and more as the sites get harder — at the top end it is the difference between the loot and nothing.
- Understand Virus Coherence and Virus StrengthCoherence is your health; strength is your damage.
- Learn the defensive subsystemsRestoration Nodes, Firewalls and Anti-Virus each need a different response.
- Learn the utility subsystemsSelf-repair, Polymorphic Shield and the rest are worth detouring for.
- Identify the System Core and learn when to attack it
- Learn how Data and Relic analyzers differ
- the ruleStop clicking nodes at randomExplore outward from revealed nodes rather than gambling on blind clicks.
Failure mechanics0 / 4
Normal pirate containers generally allow two attempts before being destroyed. Special sites are far less forgiving, and this is exactly where new explorers lose the most value.
- Learn when a failed hack destroys the container
- the ruleLearn when a failed hack can damage your ship
- the ruleNever treat a Ghost Site like a normal Data Site
- the ruleNever treat a Sleeper Cache like a normal Data Site
Phase 6 — Highsec treasure hunting8
Your first real farming stage0 / 8
CCP describes the Treasure Hunter role as scanning signatures and recovering valuables through hacking and archaeology. This is that, at zero risk from other players.
- Pick a cluster of systems and scan every one
- Identify and bookmark the Data and Relic sites
- Complete pirate Data SitesReward Data loot
- Complete pirate Relic SitesReward Relic loot
- milestoneCompare Data versus Relic loot value in practiceRelic tends to pay better, but it varies by region and pirate faction.
- Learn which containers are worth prioritisingTime inside a site is risk. Hit the good cans first.
- the ruleReturn to station before your hold is worth more than you can afford to lose
- Sell your first exploration haulReward ISK
Phase 7 — Leave the starter systems8
Progress geographically, not by hull size0 / 8
This is the single biggest structural difference between Exploration and every combat career. Your progression is Exordium → Highsec → Lowsec → Nullsec and Wormholes — NOT frigate → cruiser → battleship. A Buzzard, Anathema, Helios, Cheetah or Astero can remain a legitimate endgame ship indefinitely.
- read firstBe able to replace your starter fit several times over
- Keep multiple cheap exploration ships ready to fly
- Learn to read Local
- milestoneLearn D-scan properlyIn wormholes Local tells you nothing, so D-scan becomes your only warning.
- Build a travel Overview and a PvP-warning Overview
- Learn gate-camp warning signs
- Learn to identify dangerous systems on the in-game mapShip and pod kills in the last hour are the columns that matter.
- milestoneUse your one-way Exordium shipcaster when readyCaldari Tatrys → Onnamon · Gallente Mondaekus → Intaki · Minmatar Dettisolin → Amo · Amarr Ichorah → Mehatoor. One use per character, shared with every other career.
Phase 8 — Lowsec exploration14
Where exploration starts teaching survival0 / 9
Assume someone is hunting explorers, because in lowsec someone usually is.
- Check your route, D-scan and Local before you commit
- Enter your first lowsec system and create a safe spot
- the ruleScan from a safe rather than from a celestialSitting at a planet while scanning is how explorers get probed out and killed.
- Locate and run a lowsec Data SiteReward Better loot than highsec
- Locate and run a lowsec Relic SiteReward Better loot than highsec
- Hack while watching D-scanAlt-tabbing away mid-hack is how you die.
- the ruleEscape a system containing hostile players
- Return a haul safely to highsecReward ISK
- Complete several lowsec routes without losing a ship
The survival habit0 / 5
Build this into muscle memory now — it is identical in nullsec and wormholes, where the consequences are larger.
- Keep D-scan open and scan repeatedly while hacking
- the ruleWatch for Combat Scanner Probes on D-scanCombat probes on scan means someone is looking for you specifically.
- Watch for other exploration ships and combat frigates
- Stay aligned to something whenever practical
- Always know your escape celestial or bookmark
Phase 9 — Your first wormhole5
The rule that matters more than any other0 / 5
Wormholes are temporary connections that collapse from age or from accumulated ship mass. A lost explorer with no probes and no exit bookmark is genuinely stranded.
- Fit probe launcher, spare probes, both analyzers, propulsion and a cloak if you have one
- the ruleJump through the wormhole and do NOT warp away
- the ruleBookmark the wormhole immediately, with a useful nameBefore anything else. Before looking around. Before checking D-scan.
- Verify the bookmark actually existsCheck the list. People have stranded themselves on an assumed bookmark.
- Only then begin exploring
Phase 10 — Reading a wormhole3
Show Info, and what it tells you0 / 3
Every wormhole carries both a lifetime and a mass limit, and both are visible before you commit to jumping.
- Learn to read the destinationHighsec, lowsec, nullsec, Unknown, Dangerous Unknown or Deadly Unknown.
- the ruleLearn the remaining-lifetime wordingFresh and stable, reduced lifetime, or end-of-life. EOL means it may close under you.
- the ruleLearn the mass status wordingStable, reduced, or critical. Critical means it may collapse on your next jump.
Phase 11 — Bookmark discipline and polarization8
A naming system you actually keep to0 / 5
Professional explorers use a consistent scheme — Home → A → B → C, or whatever your corporation standardises on. Consistency matters far more than which scheme you pick.
- Name your entrance and your exit consistently
- Bookmark every new wormhole you find
- Record connection type, destination, EOL status and mass status
- Identify the system's static connectionThe static is the connection that always respawns — it is how you plan a route home.
- milestoneBuild a small chain and navigate back through it
Polarization0 / 3
Jumping the same connection repeatedly locks you out of it temporarily. This catches people who assumed a wormhole was an unlimited escape hatch.
- Learn the polarization timer
- the ruleNever assume a wormhole is an unlimited escape route
- Account for polarization before baiting or evading anyone
Phase 12 — C1–C3 pirate Data and Relic sites4
Wormhole treasure hunting0 / 4
Pirate Relic and Data sites appear in normal space and in C1–C3 wormholes including shattered systems. Standard pirate sites generally have no NPC defenders — other players are the danger.
- Learn the pirate faction naming patternsBlood Raider, Guristas, Sansha, Serpentis, Angel Cartel.
- read firstCheck a site's exact name before warpingSleeper-named sites are NOT defenceless. "Relic Site" does not mean "safe from NPCs".
- Research any unknown site before you commit
- Run C1–C3 pirate Data and Relic sitesReward Wormhole loot
Phase 13 — Intermediate training8
Scanning0 / 4
Astrometrics improves scan strength while cutting deviation and scan time; Rangefinding is straight probe strength and is the most valuable skill a dedicated explorer trains.
- Astrometrics IV
- milestoneAstrometric Rangefinding III → IV
- Astrometric Pinpointing III
- Astrometric Acquisition III
Hacking, navigation and cloaking0 / 4
Cloaking IV is the important long-term milestone — it is what makes practical Covert Ops cloak use possible.
- Hacking III → IV and Archaeology III → IV
- Navigation IV and Evasive Maneuvering IV
- Acceleration Control III–IV and Warp Drive Operation III–IV
- milestoneCloaking I → III → IVCloaking IV is the gate to everything covert.
Phase 14 — Covert capability18
The Astero route0 / 7
A Sisters of EVE frigate combining scanning, hacking, drones and covert travel. Lower skill barrier than a racial T2 Covert Ops frigate, but considerably more expensive. You can take this route, the Covert Ops route, or both — they are not exclusive.
- Train Amarr Frigate and Gallente Frigate
- Train Cloaking IV and fit a Covert Ops Cloaking Device
- Train drone support skills
- Learn cloaked travel, and entering and leaving sites cloaked
- Learn to evade hunters
- Complete a lowsec, a wormhole and a nullsec route in itReward High-value loot
- optionalOptional: build a combat Astero to hunt other explorersDrones V, T2 light drones, Propulsion Jamming, scram and web mechanics. This overlaps the Combat career.
The Covert Ops frigate route0 / 11
Anathema (Amarr), Buzzard (Caldari), Helios (Gallente), Cheetah (Minmatar). Fast, lightly armed, specialised in scanning, hacking and stealth. For a dedicated treasure hunter this is arguably the most important unlock in the career — and you can stop upgrading hull size here and still be an elite explorer.
- long trainTrain racial Frigate V
- Train Covert Ops, and Cloaking IV
- milestoneFit a Covert Ops Cloaking DeviceWarping while cloaked changes the entire risk profile of the career.
- Upgrade your scanning fit to match
- Continue Covert Ops toward IV
- Scan safely from deep-space bookmarks
- Travel lowsec and nullsec cloaked
- Explore wormhole chains cloaked
- Learn the cloak and MWD travel technique where it applies
- Escape a hostile exploration site cleanly
- milestoneRecover loot worth several times your ship's replacement costReward ISK
Phase 15 — Nullsec exploration10
Bubbles change everything0 / 10
Cloaking does not make you invulnerable, and warp disruption bubbles do not care that you are cloaked.
- the ruleUnderstand warp disruption bubbles
- Learn how Interdictors and Heavy Interdictors work
- Learn typical bubble placement around gates
- Learn tactical bookmarks and gate perches
- Learn to bounce between safes
- Enter nullsec and scan a system
- Complete your first nullsec Relic SiteReward High-value loot
- Complete your first nullsec Data SiteReward High-value loot
- the ruleEscape a bubble
- Complete a multi-region run and return the loot safelyReward ISK
Phase 16 — T2 analyzers and advanced scanning10
T2 analyzers0 / 3
A major progression milestone — higher-level analyzers are what let you beat difficult hacking grids at all.
- milestoneTrain Hacking V and fit a Data Analyzer II
- milestoneTrain Archaeology V and fit a Relic Analyzer II
- optionalOptionally investigate integrated analyzersLigature and Zeugma Integrated Analyzers do both jobs with different fitting and performance tradeoffs. Dedicated T2 analyzers remain the benchmark for pure treasure hunting.
Advanced scanning0 / 7
Core Scanner Probes are reusable when recalled correctly, so probe strength rather than ammunition cost is what actually limits you.
- long trainAstrometrics V
- Astrometric Rangefinding IV → V
- Astrometric Pinpointing IV and Acquisition IV
- Covert Ops IV, and V for a dedicated character
- Upgrade to Sisters Core Scanner ProbesReward Better scan strength
- Upgrade to a Sisters Core Probe Launcher when it makes financial sense
- Add scan-strength rigs and scanning implants
Cradle of War — Intelligence Exfil sites8
The current expansion's exploration content0 / 8
Temporary hacking sites in enemy Bulwark systems, which CCP says will persist for the duration of Cradle of War. Republic Intelligence Exfil in Amarr Bulwarks, Federal in Caldari, State in Gallente, Imperial in Minmatar. CCP specifically recommends a Navy exploration frigate fitted for both combat and hacking — this is an Explorer and Combat crossover, not a pure hacking site.
- Locate an enemy Bulwark system
- Find the Intelligence Exfil site
- the ruleBring a T1 or Navy exploration frigate fitted for hacking AND combatMagnate Navy Issue, Heron Navy Issue, Imicus Navy Issue or Probe Fleet Issue — these combine probe bonuses, hacking and real firepower.

Project Discovery & Achievements8
Project Discovery0 / 5
Officially part of CCP's Explorer career even though it involves no space at all. Phase Four analyses real-world biomedical datasets related to immune-system diseases including cancer. Daily submission caps are documented by EVE University rather than a current CCP support article — treat the exact numbers as community-verified: roughly 100/day for Alpha and 200/day for Omega, with the submission day rolling over at downtime.
