ARK: Survival Ascended — Scorched Earth

Water, heat and Wyverns — a shorter, sharper map than The Island, with one boss instead of four and a survival layer that never really lets up.

What this guide is

Scorched Earth is not a smaller Island. Its progression is genuinely different in shape: three Artifacts feed a single boss, the Manticore, at all three difficulties — where The Island runs ten Artifacts through three Guardians before a Tek Cave.

What replaces that length is a survival layer that never stops mattering. Water is deliberately scarce, heat is a constant drain, and Sandstorms, Electrical Storms and Superheat will interrupt whatever you were doing. Early phases here are about infrastructure, not gear.

The Wyvern is the map's centrepiece and its real power spike. You will also need to kill Wyverns of all three elements eventually, because Fire, Lightning and Poison Talons are Manticore tributes.

This route assumes a Scorched Earth-native playthrough with nothing transferred in from another ARK.

gateBlocks everything after it — the route genuinely stops here until this is done.

Wording used in the steps

Shorthand in the step text, not tags.

WaterThe map's defining constraint, not a flavour detail. Wells on Water Veins are what turn dehydration from a threat into a chore.
WeatherSandstorms, Electrical Storms and Superheat. Superheat in particular multiplies water consumption — a tamed Jerboa warns you before each event arrives.
TalonsFire, Lightning and Poison Wyvern Talons. Manticore tributes, and the reason you eventually hunt all three Wyvern elements rather than just raising one.
Gamma / Beta / AlphaThe three Manticore difficulties. Each needs its own Artifacts and its own Talons, because tributes are consumed.
Approximate levelsGuidance, except where a boss states a hard level gate — the Manticore does, at 55, 70 and 95.

Surviving the desert34
Phase 1 — Stranded in the desert0 / 10

Spawn near accessible water rather than deep desert, and stay out of the dunes early. A tamed Jerboa warns you before each weather event — that is worth more than it sounds.

  • Gather Stone, Flint, Fiber, Wood, Thatch and Berries
  • Craft a Stone Pick, Stone Hatchet and Spears
  • Craft basic clothing
  • prepCraft several Waterskins as soon as you can
  • Set up a temporary shelter near water, with a Bed or Sleeping Bags
  • Craft a Mortar and Pestle and start producing Narcotic
  • Collect Cactus Sap, Sand and Clay whenever convenient
  • Tame a Jerboa and learn its weather warning behaviour
It reacts before Sandstorms, Electrical Storms and Superheat arrive
  • Take your first tames0 / 4
  • gateHave reliable water, a bed, basic tools, narcotics and one utility mount
Phase 2 — Secure your water supply0 / 8

Water is deliberately far scarcer here than on The Island, and it is the map's defining survival mechanic. The goal of this phase is turning dehydration from the main threat into a managed chore.

  • Site your primary base near a reliable water source
  • Craft Water Jars once available
  • Place Water Reservoirs and build irrigation where practical
  • Locate Water Veins near your expansion sites
  • gateLearn the Water Well engram and build Wells on useful Veins
  • Tame at least one Morellatops and keep emergency water on your major mounts
  • prepCarry extra water into the dunes and mountains
  • gateBe able to leave home for extended trips without dehydration forcing you back
Phase 3 — Adobe base0 / 9

Adobe is Scorched Earth's specialised building tier and exists because of the heat. Base criteria worth weighing: water access, nearby metal and crystal, flat ground, safe Argentavis approach, cactus, and reasonable reach toward the western World Scar later.

  • Mass-harvest Sand and gather Cactus Sap
  • Produce Clay
  • Replace your main living area with Adobe
  • Build Adobe storage, a protected crafting room and a secure animal pen
  • Build a taming pen near the base
  • Craft a Tent for emergency expeditions
  • prepGather Raw Salt and produce Preserving Salt
Keep it available for long expeditions and for Wyvern Milk later
  • optionalSet up a second shelter and beds along your exploration routes
  • gateHave heat stop interrupting crafting and storage
Phase 4 — Smithy & metal tier0 / 7

Carry both Desert Cloth and stronger combat armour — you will want to swap depending on whether heat or damage is the immediate problem.

  • Build Refining Forges and a Smithy
  • Craft a Metal Pick, Metal Hatchet, Pike and Crossbow
  • Stock Tranq Arrows
  • Start harvesting Crystal, Obsidian, Sulfur and Oil
  • Craft Desert Cloth gear
  • Build your standing resource stockpile0 / 4
  • gateBe operating on metal equipment and able to kill mid-tier creatures reliably
Industry & tames27
Phase 5 — Resource-tame team0 / 10

Aim for the Argentavis + Ankylosaurus pairing as early as practical — on Scorched Earth the Argentavis becomes one of the most important progression creatures you own.

  • gateArgentavis — transport and resource hauling
  • Ankylosaurus — Metal, Flint and Crystal
  • Doedicurus — Stone
  • Thorny Dragon — Wood
  • Morellatops — hauling and water
  • Direwolf or Sabertooth — caves and combat
  • Dung Beetle — fertilizer and oil
  • optionalLymantria — an optional early flyer
  • optionalFasolasuchus — added with Scorched Earth Ascended, and able to move through sand
  • gateBe farming Metal, Stone and Wood efficiently with dedicated tames
Phase 6 — Industrialise the base0 / 10
  • Build a Fabricator and produce Gasoline
  • Build an Electrical Generator and wire the base
  • Build Refrigerators and Air Conditioners
  • Build an Industrial Grill, Industrial Forge and Chemistry Bench
  • Build a Greenhouse and crop plots, growing Citronal, Longrass, Rockarrot and Savoroot
  • Produce Medical Brew and heat-management consumables
  • prepStart mass gunpowder and ammunition production
  • prepStart collecting higher-quality saddle blueprints
  • optionalBuild Wind Turbines, a breeding barn and a kibble farm
  • gateBe able to support mass breeding, ammunition production and long expeditions
Phase 7 — Combat team0 / 7

Daeodon and Yutyrannus both exist natively on Scorched Earth, so the classic Rex + Yuty + Daeodon boss setup is available without importing anything from another map.

  • Tame high-level Rexes
  • Tame a high-level Yutyrannus
  • Tame a Daeodon
  • Secure a strong Direwolf or Sabertooth for caves
  • Acquire high-quality Flak and a strong Pump-Action Shotgun
  • prepStock shotgun ammunition, Medical Brew, Stimulants, Grappling Hooks and parachutes
  • prepStart keeping good Rex saddle blueprints
Wyverns13
Phase 8 — Prepare for the World Scar0 / 7

The World Scar is Scorched Earth's Wyvern trench. Fire, Lightning and Poison Wyverns nest along its walls. Egg colour identifies the element: Fire red, Lightning blue, Poison green.

  • prepScout the World Scar and identify approach and escape routes
  • optionalBuild a bed or outpost nearby
  • prepPrepare a fast flyer, spare armour and recovery supplies
  • Construct a Wyvern trap and practise pulling single Wyverns into it
  • Learn to safely knock out a female Wyvern for Milk
  • Locate the nests and learn to identify Fire, Lightning and Poison eggs
  • gateObtain a viable Wyvern Egg and escape the trench alive
Do not hold out for a perfect egg on the first run — a viable one you actually get home is worth more
Phase 9 — Raise your first Wyvern0 / 6

The map's premier travel and combat mount, and its biggest power spike.

  • prepPrepare Air Conditioners and incubation
  • Hatch the egg
  • Trap and knock out a female Wyvern, then collect Milk
Preserving Salt keeps it usable longer
  • Feed the baby through its growth stages and imprint where practical
  • Raise it to adulthood and level Stamina, Weight, Health and Melee
  • gateHave an adult Wyvern able to cross the map and fight wild Wyverns
Artifacts & the Manticore21
Phase 10–12 — The three Artifacts0 / 3

All three feed the Manticore, and tributes are consumed — so each difficulty needs its own set. Coordinates are ASA values and are the figures most likely to drift with map updates. Take a full cave kit: strong armour and a backup, Medical Brew, Stimulants, ranged weapons, Grappling Hooks and a cave-capable tame.

  • Artifact of the Crag — Grave of the Tyrants0 / 3
    Entrance around 28.5 / 29.3, Artifact around 35.2 / 28.1. A good first target
  • Artifact of the Gatekeeper — Old Tunnels0 / 3
Entrance around 58.6 / 47.7, Artifact around 58.2 / 43.4. In the central canyons — watch for drops and chasms
  • Artifact of the Destroyer — Ruins of Nosti0 / 3
Entrance around 78.5 / 75.6, Artifact around 79.8 / 81.3. The most dangerous of the three — place a recovery bed outside and do not rush jumps
Phase 13 — Manticore tributes0 / 4

⚠️ DEATHWORM HORNS ARE NOT REQUIRED. They are useful elsewhere, but the Manticore tribute is the three Artifacts plus Fire, Lightning and Poison Talons — nothing else. Because tributes are consumed, clearing all three difficulties needs 3 of each Artifact and 32 of each Talon in total.

  • Gamma tribute — Level 55+0 / 3
One of each Artifact, plus 2 each of Fire, Lightning and Poison Talons
  • Beta tribute — Level 70+0 / 3
One of each Artifact, plus 10 each of Fire, Lightning and Poison Talons
  • Alpha tribute — Level 95+0 / 3
One of each Artifact, plus 20 each of Fire, Lightning and Poison Talons
  • Hunt Wyverns of all three elements for their Talons
This is why you eventually fight Fire, Lightning and Poison Wyverns rather than just raising one
Phase 14 — Build the Manticore army0 / 7

The arena permits a maximum of 10 survivors and 20 creatures. A standard ground army is 17–18 bred Rexes, one Yutyrannus and one Daeodon. Comfortable Alpha targets — recommendations, not requirements: Rexes at 25,000–35,000+ Health and 700–1,000%+ Melee with 80+ armour saddles. Better saddles reduce how hard you need to push those numbers.

  • Find high-Health and high-Melee Rex lines and combine the stats
  • Breed the boss army and imprint where practical
  • prepLevel Health and Melee, and craft boss saddles
  • Prepare a strong Yutyrannus with high Health and Stamina
  • Prepare a Daeodon with high Food, and carry plenty of food for it
  • prepPrepare replacement creatures
  • prepStock Pump-Action Shotguns, a large ammunition reserve, Medical Brew, food and Stimulants
Phase 15–17 — The Manticore0 / 7

The Manticore inflicts Torpor, which compounds dangerously over a long fight — watch your creatures' torpor, not just their health. The arena runs around 40°C / 104°F, so hyperthermal protection matters. It alternates between landing and flying: commit when it lands, use ranged weapons when it does not. Ascension increases do NOT stack — the highest difficulty you complete sets the bonus.

  • prepRepair armour and weapons, heal and feed every creature, and position the army in the teleport area
  • Defeat the Gamma Manticore
Level 55+. Roughly 38 Element, and +5 survivor levels if this is your highest difficulty
  • prepUpgrade before Beta — replace weak Rexes, improve saddles, push Health and Melee, and carry far more ammunition
  • Defeat the Beta Manticore
Level 70+. Roughly 135 Element, and +10 survivor levels if this is your highest difficulty
  • prepPrepare for Alpha — strongest saddles, fully healed army, full repairs and heat protection
  • gateDefeat the Alpha Manticore
Level 95+. Roughly 285 Element. Stay alert for Deathworm and Rock Elemental pressure in the arena, and keep the Rexes from scattering
  • gateComplete Scorched Earth Ascension — the full +15 survivor levels
Optional completion30
Wyvern & Deathworm mastery0 / 7

The Manticore arena is unusual among ARK arenas because flyers can enter — which makes a Wyvern-based Manticore army a genuine alternative endgame project rather than a curiosity.

  • optionalRaise high-level Fire, Lightning and Poison Wyverns
  • optionalImprove your Wyvern lines where your server's mechanics allow
  • optionalHunt Alpha Wyverns
  • optionalBuild a permanent World Scar hunting outpost
  • optionalHunt Deathworms and collect Deathworm Horns
  • optionalHunt Alpha Deathworms

Cave farming & Tek0 / 6

The Manticore awards Tekgrams and Element, and beating further difficulties expands what you can build.

  • optionalFarm Grave of the Tyrants, Old Tunnels and Ruins of Nosti for loot
  • optionalStock duplicate Artifacts
  • optionalHunt improved weapon and saddle blueprints
  • optionalBuild a Tek Replicator using your Manticore Element
  • optionalCraft unlocked Tek equipment and establish Tek power
  • optionalRe-farm the Manticore for Element as needed
Bob's Tall Tales0 / 6

A PAID expansion and a parallel branch — none of it is required for the Manticore or Ascension. The Oasisaur is the headline: a massive mobile flying platform that can reincarnate fallen tames.

  • dlcUnlock the Bob's Tall Tales Scorched Earth content
  • dlcBuild Western-style structures
  • dlcCraft a Shovel and explore the buried treasure mechanics
  • dlcBuild and use a Wagon
  • dlcEstablish a train system and useful rail connections
  • dlcTame an Oasisaur, build on it, and try its creature-revival mechanic
