ARK: Survival Ascended — Aberration
Fresh survivor to Alpha Aberrant Ascension — the full underground route, in the order that keeps you ahead of the radiation.
What this guide is
Aberration is ARK’s underground map, and it is gated differently from every other one: not by your creatures, but by the environment. Three regions — Fertile, Bioluminescent and Element — with radiation as the wall between the second and the third, and a Hazard Suit as the only key.
It is also the map where you cannot simply tame your way forward. The Rock Drake is stolen as an egg and raised on Nameless Venom; the Reaper King is not tamed at all. Both are progression events rather than taming targets.
This route assumes an Aberration-native playthrough — nothing imported from another ARK. Transfers collapse whole phases of it, so if you are bringing gear in, treat the early phases as optional rather than skipped.
Phase levels are guidance. The real gates here are Charge Light, the Hazard Suit and the Rock Drake.

Walkthrough
Verified for Aberration Ascended✓ Verified in-gameThe Green Zone21
Phase 1 — Survive the Fertile Region (levels ~1–20)0 / 8
The Fertile Region is Aberration’s introduction and stays your base of operations until you have real mobility. Spawn in one of the easier Fertile spawns.
- Gather Stone, Wood, Fungal Wood, Thatch and Fiber
- Craft a Stone Pick, Stone Hatchet and Spears
- Craft Cloth Armor
- prepBuild a small starter shelter with Storage and a Bed
- Place Sleeping Bags along your early routes
- Build a Mortar and Pestle and begin Narcotic production
- Craft a Bow and begin stockpiling Tranq Arrows
- Learn to tell Aberration’s four mushrooms apart — Aggeravic, Aquatic, Ascerbic and AuricBlindly eating mushrooms is not a survival strategy here the way it is on The Island. All four matter later for food, hazard counterplay and environmental resistance, so stockpile them rather than discarding them.
Phase 2 — Starter tames0 / 5
Your first creatures should solve gathering, carrying and survival. None of them are boss creatures.
- gateTame a Bulbdog and learn Charge Light⚠️ DO THIS EARLY. Charge Light is one of Aberration’s fundamental mechanics rather than a convenience — it suppresses Nameless and weakens Reapers, and a great deal of the map is impassable without it. Shinehorn, Featherlight and Glowtail are the other Charge Pets.
- Keep a Charge Pet on your shoulder whenever you leave the base
- Tame a Moschops for early Fiber and Berry gathering
- Tame an Iguanodon or Parasaur as a first mountIguanodon is the better low-cost explorer before you reach Aberration’s specialised creatures.
- optionalTame a Stego and build a Narcoberry stockpile
Phase 3 — The Metal Age (levels ~20–40)0 / 8
Stop expanding the starter shack and go looking for metal.
- Locate Metal deposits and build a Refining Forge
- Smelt Metal Ingots and build a Smithy
- Craft a Metal Pick and Metal Hatchet
- Craft a Crossbow and a Pike
- Begin producing Cementing Paste
- Collect Crystal and stockpile Chitin
- prepBegin gathering Green GemsGreen Gems feed straight into Aberration’s traversal tools, so start early rather than when you need them.
- Upgrade your base defences and begin firearm progression
Mobility & the Blue Zone39
Phase 4 — Tame a Ravager0 / 5
The Ravager is Aberration’s first real mobility breakpoint — roughly what the Pteranodon-to-Argentavis step is on The Island, except without a flyer.
- prepLocate a Ravager pack and separate one target from it
- Knock out and tame a high-level Ravager
- Craft a Ravager Saddle
- Level Health, Stamina and Weight
- optionalTame or breed spare Ravagers
Phase 5 — Unlock vertical traversal0 / 6
Aberration is a vertical map, and this is the phase where your base design should change from roads to platforms, ziplines and elevators.
- gateCraft Climbing PicksUnlocks at Level 34. Always carry replacements — never depend on one pair.
- Practise climbing before you need it somewhere dangerous
- Unlock the Zip-Line Anchor and carry anchors with you
- Build zipline routes around your base and to your resource runs
- Ride ziplines with the Ravager
- Unlock the Zip-Line Motor Attachment
Phase 6 — Yi Ling (ASA only)0 / 5
Free with Aberration Ascended and built for this terrain — jumping, dashing, wall-clinging and gliding. It sits between the Ravager and the Rock Drake rather than being an endgame creature, and it does not replace the Drake.
- optionalLocate a high-level Yi Ling
- optionalKnock it out using its own taming mechanics
- optionalTame the Yi Ling
- optionalUnlock the Yi Ling Saddle at Level 50
- optionalPractise wall-clinging and gliding, then use it for scouting
Phase 7 — Build the main base0 / 7
Once you have a Ravager or Yi Ling and metal tools, stop investing in the spawn shack. Site the main base for access to BOTH Green Zone resources and Blue Zone progression rather than burying it somewhere safe.
- Build multiple Refining Forges, a Smithy and a Fabricator
- Run electricity and add a Refrigerator and Greenhouse
- Build an Industrial Forge and Chemistry Bench
- Set up a breeding area, including Charge Pet breeding
- Set up Gas and Gem storage
- Build vertical transport and creature parking into the base
- prepSet up Hazard Suit production
Phase 8 — Enter the Bioluminescent Region0 / 3
The first serious difficulty jump. Expect Nameless, wild Ravagers, Karkinos, Megalosaurus, dangerous water and much stronger predators.
- prepKit out before entering — Crossbow, Tranq Arrows, a Shotgun or Longneck, Flak, Medical Brews, Climbing Picks and ziplines
- gateBring a Charge Pet, and a spare if you can
- If Nameless start emerging, check your Charge Light immediately⚠️ THE GOLDEN RULE OF THE BLUE ZONE. Leaving Nameless active long enough escalates — ultimately into a Subterranean Reaper King, which is a far worse problem than the one you started with.
Phase 9 — Blue Gem progression0 / 4
Blue Gems are the Blue Zone’s real objective, because they feed the Hazard Suit.
- Locate Blue Gem deposits and establish a safe harvesting route
- gateStockpile Blue Gems
- Stockpile Metal, Crystal and Obsidian
- Keep collecting Polymer resources
Phase 10 — Utility roster0 / 5
Build the working roster before the Red Zone, not during it. ASA made most Aberrant creatures radiation-resistant — Ravager and Roll Rat are among the notable exceptions.
- Tame a high-level Aberrant Ankylosaurus for MetalRadiation-immune in ASA, unlike the concerns that applied in original Aberration.
- Tame an Aberrant Doedicurus for StoneAlso radiation-immune in ASA.
- Tame a Karkinos and level Weight and Health
- Learn the Karkinos charged jump
- Use the Karkinos to carry the Anky and DoedicurusIt holds two creatures, makes enormous jumps and hauls heavy loads — one of the best all-round travel mounts on the map.
Phase 11 — Aberrant Megalosaurus0 / 4
One of your major combat goals, and unusually strong here for a specific reason: the map is sunless, so it never suffers the normal Megalosaurus daytime sleep cycle. It is also radiation-immune.
- prepFind and tame a high-level male and female
- Begin breeding, prioritising Health and Melee
- Find or craft better saddles
- Raise a line good enough for Red Zone combat, Drake trench support and Rockwell
Radiation & the Rock Drake34
Phase 12 — Gas production0 / 3
Congealed Gas Balls are needed for the Hazard Suit, Charge Batteries, Charge Lanterns and much of Aberration’s equipment.
- Locate a Gas Vein and collect the naturally ejected gas balls
- Unlock and place a Gas Collector on a vein
- gateEstablish regular collection and stockpile Congealed Gas Balls
Phase 13 — Craft the Hazard Suit0 / 4
Aberration’s real access key. Unlocks at Level 68; a full set protects against radiation and several other environmental contaminants. Approximate full-set cost: 155 Hide, 235 Fiber, 83 Blue Gems, 72 Polymer, 166 Crystal, 125 Congealed Gas Balls, plus crafting resources.
- gateReach Level 68 and unlock the complete Hazard Suit
- Gather the Blue Gems, Polymer, Crystal and Congealed Gas Balls
- Craft one complete Hazard Suit
- prepCraft at least one full spare set⚠️ ONE SUIT IS NOT INSURANCE. Durability drains while you are exposed, so a serious Red Zone expedition needs spares at your base and spare pieces on your person.
Phase 14 — Enter the Element Region0 / 7
The map opens dramatically here. Red Gems, Element Ore, Rock Drakes, Reaper Queens, Nameless, high-level Aberrant predators and Rockwell’s territory.
- gateEnter wearing a full Hazard Suit, carrying spare pieces
- Bring a Charge Pet and a radiation-immune mount
- Locate and gather Red Gems
- Locate Element Ore
- prepLearn safe routes in and out before going deep
- Locate Rock Drake territory
- Locate the Rockwell Terminal
Phase 15 — Prepare for the first Rock Drake egg0 / 3
Aberration’s defining milestone, and you cannot tame a Rock Drake normally. The route is: enter the Grave of the Lost, steal an egg, escape, hatch it, and raise it on Nameless Venom. The nesting area is irradiated.
- prepAssemble the expedition — multiple Hazard Suits, Charge Pet, Medical Brews, Climbing Picks, Shotgun and plenty of ammo
- Bring a strong radiation-immune combat tameAberrant Megalosaurus for combat, Aberrant Spino for speed and durability, Karkinos for jumping, or Yi Ling for wall-cling and glide access.
- Plan the escape route before you go in⚠️ Reaching a nest and getting out alive are different problems. Wild Rock Drakes aggro the instant an egg is taken.
Phase 16 — Steal the egg0 / 5
Once you take an egg the nearby Drakes attack, and because they climb and glide, going vertical does not shake them.
- Enter the Grave of the Lost and locate the nests
- Scout egg levels and take the highest you can realistically retrieve
- Clear nearby Drakes where practical — do not try to fight the whole population
- Steal the egg and begin escaping immediately
- Return to a safe zone and store the egg
Phase 17 — Raise the Drake0 / 5
Nameless Venom restores 400 Food to an immature Rock Drake and is the only normal food they accept before adulthood.
- prepPrepare the incubation area with Air Conditioners or an equivalent
- Hatch the egg
- Farm Nameless Venom on a rolling basis⚠️ Venom spoils quickly. Do not farm dozens of them hours before you need them — farm as you feed.
- Feed, imprint and mature the Drake
- Craft a Rock Drake Saddle
Phase 18 — The Rock Drake power spike0 / 3
The map changes completely here. Climbing, gliding, camouflage, nearby-Reaper detection and safe radiation traversal — abilities close to purpose-built for this terrain.
- Use the Drake as your primary explorer and vertical transport
- Use it as your Red Zone, Artifact and Surface mount
- Use it for Reaper hunting and further egg runs
Phase 19 — Rock Drake breeding programme0 / 4
Unlike Wyverns in older ARK progression, Rock Drakes breed once you have your initial stock — and a Drake is itself the best tool for collecting more Drake eggs, so repeat runs get dramatically safer.
- Acquire a second high-level Drake
- Breed for Health, Stamina and Melee
- Imprint a dedicated exploration Drake and a dedicated combat Drake
- Keep replacement Drakes on hand
The Surface & the Artifacts26
Phase 20 — The Surface0 / 7
⚠️ GO AT NIGHT. In daylight the Surface is lethally hot and burns players and creatures, and a HAZARD SUIT DOES NOT PROTECT YOU FROM THE SUNLIGHT. ASA runs three repeating light cycles across a 10-day pattern: 50/50 (night ~18:50–06:50), 90/10 (night ~23:10–02:25) and 10/90 (night ~14:25–11:10). Days ending in 7, 8 and 9 are the long-night window. Times vary slightly.
- gateCheck the current day and aim for a long-night cycle
- prepMemorise your entrance before going up
- Take the Rock Drake and carry backup gear
- Hunt Supply Drops and farm high-quality blueprints
- Gather Element Ore
- Kill Surface Reapers as needed
- Retreat well before daylightLeave margin. The burn does not wait for you to finish the drop you are opening.
Phase 21 — Blueprint farming0 / 4
Aberration’s endgame runs on equipment quality. For Rockwell specifically, a high-quality Pump-Action Shotgun is among the most useful items on the map.
- Farm Surface Supply Drops, Artifact cave loot and deep-region crates
- prepPrioritise a Pump-Action Shotgun blueprint
- Collect Flak Armor and Hazard Suit blueprints
- Collect Rock Drake, Megalosaurus and Karkinos Saddle blueprints
Phase 22 — Craft Element at a Charge Node0 / 4
Unlike The Island, Aberration can manufacture Element. One craft costs 20 Green Gems, 15 Blue Gems, 10 Red Gems, 8 Charge Batteries, 50 Congealed Gas Balls and 20 Element Ore, and yields 3 Element. Charge Nodes also gained Transmitter functionality in ASA.
- Collect Green, Blue and Red Gems and Element Ore
- Produce and charge Charge Batteries
- Find a Charge Node and craft Element
- Establish an Element stockpile
Phase 23 — Obtain a Reaper King0 / 7
Optional for finishing the map, but a defining milestone. You do not tame a Reaper: you weaken a Queen, remove your Charge Light, allow the impregnation, gain XP carrying the embryo, then birth and claim the baby. In ASA, Reaper King level scales with the Survivor’s level.
- prepPrepare — good Rock Drake, strong armour, Charge Pet, Shotgun, Medical Brews, Stimulants
- optionalLocate and trap a Reaper Queen
- optionalFight her with Charge Light active, and bring her below roughly 2,000 HP
- optionalTurn the Charge Light OFF, then allow the impregnation⚠️ The order matters and it is counter-intuitive. Charge Light is what keeps you alive up to this point, and it is also what prevents the impregnation — so it goes off only once she is weak enough.
- optionalEscape alive and gain XP while carrying the embryo
- optionalPrepare a secure birthing room and acquire Reaper Pheromone Glands
- optionalGive birth, then claim, imprint and raise the Reaper King
Phase 24 — The Artifact campaign0 / 4
Far more streamlined than The Island: three Artifacts, and all three are required for EVERY Rockwell difficulty.
- gateArtifact of the Depths — Old Railway CaveEntrance approx 48.3, 27.2 — Artifact approx 51.2, 23.8. The reasonable one to start with. Narrow sections stop many large creatures walking through, so Ravagers, ziplines, climbing gear and smaller combat creatures earn their place. Bring a shotgun, ammo, Climbing Picks, Zip-Lines and a Zip-Line Motor or suitable mount.
- gateArtifact of the Shadows — Hidden GrottoEntrance approx 55.2, 65.9 — Artifact approx 50.5, 72.6. The aquatic one, and the community wiki currently calls it the hardest of the three to traverse normally. Bring SCUBA and a backup set, a strong amphibious mount, and expect Electrophorus and Karkinos.
- gateArtifact of the Stalker — Elemental VaultEntrance approx 82.4, 48.2 (alternate approx 81.0, 47.0) — Artifact approx 91.7, 51.3. The entire cave is radioactive, with dangerous ravines and Element water. Full Hazard Suit plus backup pieces, Charge Pet, shotgun. Follow the blue crystals, use the Drake’s climbing and take the ceiling where practical.
- gateConfirm all three Artifacts are secured
Rockwell & Ascension33
Phase 25 — Rockwell tributes0 / 2
Gamma needs only the three Artifacts. Beta and Alpha add creature trophies on top. Player level requirements are 60 / 75 / 100.
- Beta tribute — 4 Basilisk Scales, 12 Nameless Venom, 2 Reaper Pheromone Glands, 2 Rock Drake Feathers
- Alpha tribute — 8 Basilisk Scales, 20 Nameless Venom, 7 Reaper Pheromone Glands, 7 Rock Drake Feathers
Phase 26 — The Alpha creature hunt0 / 3
Alpha Rockwell additionally needs one trophy from each of three Alpha creatures.
- Kill an Alpha Basilisk for the Alpha Basilisk Fang
- Kill an Alpha Karkinos for the Alpha Karkinos Claw
- Kill an Alpha Surface Reaper King for the Alpha Reaper King BarbNeeds a long Surface night. This is the best reason not to abandon the Surface once you have your blueprints.
Phase 27 — Build the Rockwell force0 / 4
Not The Island’s "breed 19 Rexes and a Yuty". The arena allows up to 10 Survivors and 20 creatures, and Rock Drakes are specifically permitted here despite being climbers.
- prepBreed a high-level Aberrant Megalosaurus pair and combine Health and Melee
- Fully imprint the offspring and level the army
- Obtain strong Megalosaurus saddles
- Bring a strong imprinted Rock Drake with high Health and StaminaUse it for mobility and positioning rather than expecting it to face-tank the fight.
Phase 28 — Personal equipment0 / 5
Rockwell rewards ranged damage. The fight is repeated cycles of destroying tentacles and then damaging Rockwell during vulnerability phases; later phases add Nameless and nastier tentacle attacks, which is where Charge Light earns its place.
- prepBring a high-quality Pump-Action Shotgun and a backup
- Bring hundreds of shells
- Bring high-quality Flak and backup armour
- Bring Medical Brews, food and water
- gateBring a Charge Pet, and a spare if possible
Phase 29 — Gamma Rockwell (level 60)0 / 5
Tribute is the three Artifacts and nothing else.
- Reach Level 60 and deliver the three Artifacts
- Activate the Rockwell Portal
- Destroy tentacles, then damage Rockwell during the vulnerable phases
- Maintain Charge Light as adds appear
- Defeat Gamma Rockwell and complete Gamma Aberrant Ascension
Phase 30 — Beta Rockwell (level 75)0 / 3
- Reach Level 75 and deliver the Artifacts plus the Beta tribute
- Upgrade weapons, saddles and army
- Defeat Beta Rockwell and complete Beta Aberrant Ascension
Phase 31 — Alpha Rockwell (level 100)0 / 6
The benchmark for "Aberration finished".
- gateReach Level 100 and deliver the Artifacts, the Alpha tribute and the three Alpha trophies
- prepRepair and heal everything before entering
- Activate Alpha Rockwell
- Work the tentacle cycles and control the Nameless and Reapers
- Damage Rockwell during vulnerability and survive the final phases
- Defeat Alpha Rockwell
Phase 32 — Ascension0 / 5
Rockwell is Aberration’s Ascension boss. The difficulty tiers are alternatives rather than cumulative: Gamma grants +5, Beta +10 and Alpha the full +15.
- Loot the Rockwell reward
- gateMove the rewarded Element into a surviving creature’s inventory BEFORE the cutscene⚠️ ASA-SPECIFIC AND EASY TO LOSE. Rockwell now awards Element, and Ascension uploads your character — Wildcard explicitly advises moving it onto a creature first if you want to keep it.
- Complete Gamma Aberrant Ascension
- Complete Beta Aberrant Ascension
- Complete Alpha Aberrant Ascension and take the full +15 level increase
Optional completion18
Basilisk0 / 3
Not required to beat Aberration, but a proper late-game milestone. Passive-tamed with Rock Drake eggs, and breedable in ASA.
- optionalAcquire spare Rock Drake eggs
- optionalLocate a high-level Basilisk and passive tame it with eggs
- optionalBreed Basilisks
Karkinos breeding0 / 3
Karkinos became breedable in Survival Ascended, which makes a good line far more worthwhile than it was originally.
- optionalTame a high-level male and female Karkinos
- optionalCombine Weight, Health and Melee
- optionalFully imprint a utility Karkinos
Yi Ling mastery0 / 3
ASA’s free community-voted addition, and the biggest single difference between this route and an original-Aberration guide.
- optionalBreed and imprint a high-level Yi Ling
- optionalLearn the Razor and Poison feather mechanics
- optionalEstablish a dedicated mobility Yi Ling
Prestige goals0 / 4
- optionalComplete the Explorer Notes
- optionalBuild Tek infrastructure
- optionalMaster Charge Node Element production
- optionalBreed a high-stat Rock Drake line
Bob’s Tall Tales — Steampunk Ascent0 / 5
⚠️ PAID CONTENT, and deliberately separated from the required route. None of this is needed to finish Aberration, but it changes progression meaningfully if you own it.
